What do IODE members do?
The primary function of IODE is to enhance the quality of life for individuals through our community service, education support and citizenship programs.
IODE City of Lakes Chapter members meet once a month to plan and organize our fundraising activities and community support. Some meetings focus on chapter business; other times we roll up our sleeves and work on our programs. This includes our Baby Layette Challenge held in our April meeting, when we compete to bring the best layette possible on a budget of just $20; or our December meeting, when we package and wrap our Christmas gifts for the youth and seniors we support.
Aside from our meetings, we have "IODE in Action" activities, which include both volunteering in the community and tackling the legwork required by the programs we run. Examples include serving meals at the Elgin Street Mission, packaging toiletry kits and Spring Cleaning Buckets, and baking for our Tour of Homes, Holly & Ivy Tea.
I want to volunteer with IODE. Do I need to be invited to join, or voted in to become a member?
Any woman is welcome to join our chapter. You do not need to be invited to join, and there is no vote taken before you are admitted. As long as you are interested in volunteering and working to creating a better Canada and Sudbury, you are welcome in our chapter.
Is there a membership fee?
IODE City of Lakes Chapter does not charge a chapter fee, but we do pay membership fees to our Provincial and National Chapter, totaling $70.
The National Dues are meant to cover the administrative costs of running the IODE as a National Charitable Organization including the salary of a full time secretary, rent for the National office, supplies for mailings, the cost of the National website and other communications materials. There are also costs associated with maintaining IODE as a national charitable organization registered as a corporation under the Canada Not-For-Profit Corporations Act.
In comparison, the cost of membership in other similar organizations is similar if not higher than IODE. For example, membership in the Rotary Club costs $350 annually and membership fees for the Lions Club are $120 ($80 dues + $50 donation) annually.
I think I'd like to volunteer my time with IODE, but I'm not sure if I want to become a member. Is there a trial period?
Yes, you can join IODE City of Lakes Chapter meetings and activities for three months before deciding if you would like to become a member.
How do you decide what organizations to support?
IODE focuses its efforts on three key areas: community service, education support, and citizenship programs. Any program or activity that supports one of these three areas will be considered by the City of Lakes Chapter.
Any member can propose new activities, organizations or programs to support through out the year. If funds allow, new proposals can be voted in by the membership at any time of the year. If the necessary funds are not available, proposals will be presented to the membership for vote prior to the Executive budgeting meeting in January.
